Ahmad Naser Sarmast es un etnomusicólogo afgano-australiano. Es el fundador y director del Instituto Nacional de Música de Afganistán. Como su padre, Ustad Salim Sarmast, que fue un famoso músico, compositor y director de orquesta en Afganistán, Ahmad creció expuesto a una amplia variedad de influencias musicales. Sarmast obtuvo un Máster en musicología en 1993 en el Conservatorio Estatal de Moscú.

En 2005, Sarmast se convirtió en el primer afgano en obtener un doctorado en música, obteniendo su doctorado en la Universidad de Monash. Por invitación del Ministerio de Educación afgano, Sarmast regresó al Afganistán para ayudar a revivir las tradiciones musicales de su país natal después de la derrota de los talibanes que suprimieron las tradiciones musicales afganas.

Fundado en 2010 por el Dr. Ahmad Sarmast, el Instituto Nacional de Música de Afganistán (ANIM) es la primera y única escuela de música del país, donde niños/as afganos talentosos/as, independientemente de su género, situación social y origen étnico, reciben formación en un entorno mixto en música clásica tradicional y occidental afgana, al tiempo que reciben una educación académica general de alta calidad. El ANIM se centra especialmente en apoyar al grupo más desfavorecido de la sociedad afgana: huérfanos, niños/as trabajadores de la calle, mujeres y niñas. Su cuerpo estudiantil representa un mosaico de etnias de todas las partes de Afganistán.
