Ahmad Naser Sarmast afganiar-australiar etnomusikologoa da. Afganistango Musika Institutu Nazionalaren sortzailea eta zuzendaria da. Bere aita bezala, Ustad Salim Sarmast, musikari, konpositore eta orkestra-zuzendari ospetsua izan zena Afganistanen, Ahmad eragin musikal ugariren eraginpean hazi zen. Sarmastek musikologiako masterra lortu zuen 1993an Moskuko Estatuko Kontserbatorioan.
2005ean, Sarmast musikako doktoretza lortu zuen lehen afganiarra izan zen, eta doktoretza lortu zuen Monasheko Unibertsitatean. Afganistango Hezkuntza Ministerioak gonbidatuta, Sarmast Afganistanera itzuli zen bere jaioterriko musika tradizioak berpizten laguntzeko, Afganistango musika tradizioak ezabatu zituzten talibanen porrotaren ondoren.
2010ean Ahmad Sarmast doktoreak sortua, Afganistango Musika Institutu Nazionala (ANIM) herrialdeko lehenengo musika-eskola eta bakarra da. Bertan, Afganistango haur talentudunek, beren generoa, gizarte-egoera eta jatorri etnikoa edozein izanik ere, Afganistango eta Afganistango mendebaldeko musika klasikoko prestakuntza jasotzen dute ingurune misto batean, eta, aldi berean, kalitate handiko hezkuntza akademiko orokorra jasotzen dute.
