Lorena Fernández Álvarez is a computer engineer, with a master’s degree in information security, and is a specialist in the ethics of digitalization and applied artificial intelligence. She currently serves as Director of Digital Communication at the University of Deusto, where she promotes a critical and socially engaged perspective on technological development.

Her work focuses on analyzing intersectional biases in artificial intelligence, integrating gender perspectives into scientific research, and promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines, particularly among girls and young women. Since 2009, she has contributed to the radio program Hoy por Hoy Bilbao on Cadena SER, where she leads a segment dedicated to technology.

She is a member of the European Commission’s expert group Gendered Innovations, led by Stanford University, and part of the core team of the Horizon Europe project RE-WIRING (Realising Girls’ and Women’s Inclusion, Representation and Empowerment). She also sits on the Comité de Sabias of the Feminismos 4.0 Chair at the University of Vigo and on the Board of Trustees of the EDE Foundation.

She serves as a jury member for the Ada Byron Award for Women in Technology and as a mentor in the Inspira STEAM program, which aims to inspire scientific and technological vocations in girls. In collaboration with Pablo Garaizar and Iñigo Maestro, she co-created Nobel Run, a board game that challenges gender stereotypes in science. Together with Garaizar, she is also the co-author of Artificial Intelligence Explained for Everyone (published by A Fin de Cuentos), available in Catalan and Basque, and has promoted a calendar highlighting women scientists.
