Adjoa Andoh is a British actress, director, and writer, born in Clifton, Bristol, in 1963. With a career spanning over four decades, she is a prominent figure in theatre, television, and film in the UK. Adjoa was recently made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her services to drama.
She is internationally known for her portrayal of Lady Danbury in Netflix’s Bridgerton and its prequel Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, a role that has earned her four NAACP Image Award nominations. She also starred in the thriller series The Red King (ALIBI/ITV, 2024), and has appeared in Silent Witness (BBC1) and The Witcher (Netflix), among others.
In theatre, she has had an extensive career with leading roles at the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, the Royal Court, the Young Vic, the Kiln Theatre, and Shakespeare’s Globe, where in 2019 she conceived, co-directed, and starred in a groundbreaking production of Richard II, the first UK production performed exclusively by women of colour. In 2023, she directed, co-produced, and starred in Richard III at the Liverpool Playhouse and the Rose Theatre Kingston.
Her Hollywood debut came in 2009 alongside Morgan Freeman in Invictus, and her film credits include Fractured, Adulthood, Brotherhood, I Is a Long Memoried Woman, and What My Mother Told Me.
She is also a renowned audiobook narrator, with over 250 titles to her name, and is co-director of SwingingTheLens, a production company focused on diverse and inclusive storytelling.
Adjoa Andoh is an Associate Artist of the Royal Shakespeare Company, an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and of the Shakespeare Association of America. She is also an ambassador for the International Rescue Committee and patron of Tree Aid and HACSA – The Heritage and Cultural Society of Africa. Her work combines artistic excellence with deep social and cultural commitment.
María Goiricelaya es directora, dramaturga e investigadora teatral, nacida en Bilbao. Es reconocida por su doble faceta como creadora escénica e investigadora, con un destacado recorrido en la dirección de espectáculos de teatro y ópera para instituciones de referencia.
Doctora en Investigación y Creación en Arte por la Universidad del País Vasco, realizó su tesis sobre el entrenamiento vocal del actor en los siglos XX y XXI en 2016. Es licenciada en Comunicación Audiovisual y posee un Posgrado en Artes Escénicas por la UPV/EHU, además de varios másteres: Teatro Musical (Royal Central School of Speech & Drama), Artes Escénicas (Universidad Rey Juan Carlos) y Gestión Cultural (UOC). Su formación incluye también estancias en centros de investigación teatral como el Roy Hart Center (Francia), Teatr Piesn Kozla (Polonia) y Arthoc International Centre (Rumanía), entre otros.
Ha dirigido y creado espectáculos para espacios como el Centro Dramático Nacional, Matadero Madrid, Teatro Arriaga, Palacio Euskalduna y Kursaal, y su trabajo se ha presentado en festivales nacionales como el Festival de Otoño, GREC, Temporada Alta y Castell de Peralada, así como en escenarios internacionales en Uruguay, Chile y Argentina.
En 2017 fundó junto a la actriz y creadora Ane Pikaza su propio sello artístico, La Dramática Errante, con el que desarrolla proyectos escénicos de creación contemporánea.
Entre sus trabajos recientes destacan Dysphoria; Ni flores, ni funeral, ni cenizas, ni tantán (texto finalista en el Premio Nacional de Literatura Dramática 2023); Filtro (Sala Verdi); Festen (Teatro Arriaga); play! (Centro Dramático Nacional); Nevenka (Teatro Alhambra); Yerma (Sala BBK), con la que obtuvo el Premio Max a Mejor Adaptación; y Altsasu (Teatro Arriaga), finalista a Mejor Espectáculo y Mejor Autoría en los Premios Max 2023.
Actualmente compagina su labor de dirección y dramaturgia con la residencia artística en el Centro Dramático Nacional, la programación artística de la Sala BBK y la dirección artística del Festival de Teatro de Olite.
